“I will assume the undertaking for my
own crown of
Castile
, and I am ready to pawn my jewels to defray the expenses of it, if the funds in
the treasury should be found inadequate.” Theses were the words of one of
Spain
’s strongest leaders whose two main desires were to be a devout Catholic and
to unite
Spain
. Because of her determination, she set a great foundation for
Spain
’s Golden Age. Her name was Queen Isabella.
When
Isabella was seventeen, she married King Ferdinand of
Aragon
. Together they proved to be a great team. First they took away the power of the
nobles and set up a better law system, which reduced the amount of crime. By
building better roads and setting up a unified money system, they helped
Spain
’s economy. They also sponsored
Columbus
as he traveled to the new world making
Spain
’s empire greater while bringing in wealth. One of their greatest
accomplishments was driving out the Moors who had occupied parts of
Spain
for 250 years. These accomplishments brought
Spain
into what was known as the Golden Age.
