Elizabeth graduated with high honors on January 3rd,
1849. After graduating she moved to
Paris
to learn more about medicine.
When she returned in 1861 she opened a institution to help other women become
doctors. Also, she opened a store where woman and children could buy medicine.
Blackwell did not have any children or husband most likely because she was so
busy with her work and helping people. Finally, in 1857 Elizabeth and her sister
Emily raised money to open the first infirmary ran by all woman. They named it
The New York Infirmary for Woman and Children.
In 1868 the infirmary opened a
medical collage for women. After that she had gotten a letter from Europe saying
“come to your homeland and do for the women in Europe what you have done in
America
”. She left the infirmary to her sister and returned to
Europe
in 1869; there she served as a champion of woman’s rights. During the Civil
War she organized a team of woman nurses for field service.
Elizabeth Blackwell died on May 3rd, 1910 at
the old age of 89.
