Principal's Update

Congratulations Future Cities:   Future Cities is a national competition for junior high students.  The competition is in the areas of science, technology, and language arts and the concept is that teams design a city for 150 years in the future.  This year the competition required that each team design a computer city, design and build a scale model of the future city that was totally dependent on renewable energy sources, write an essay about the solutions to creating a renewable energy city and a narrative about their city, then present their project and field questions from professionals in the areas of engineering.  Their renewable energy source was the REGI (Renewable Energy Generation Island).  This man-made floating island utilizes the energy that water, sun and wind  produce to power the city “Aqua Sol Viente.”  The team that created this futuristic city consisted of:  Ariana Hin, Nate Jensen, Cesar Marquez, Aaron Ochoa, Sarah LoSole (alternate presenter), and the three presenters – Sabrina Esquivel, Riley Noland, and Carolyn Ringer.  On Saturday, January 18, the students competed in a preliminary competition at Stanislaus County and won first place.  On Saturday, January 21, they competed at UC Davis in the state competition and for the second year, they won first place.  As California champions, our team will be representing our state in the finals in Washington DC in mid-February.  We are extremely proud of our students and wish them the best in their up-coming competition.

College Logo Day:  We want to encourage all our students to be college bound.  February 3rd is National Wear your College Logo Day.  We encourage all students to wear a college logo shirt or sweatshirt.

100 Day:  February 1st  - We will celebrate one hundred days of learning through projects and presentations in kindergarten through third grade.

6th Graders to OE:  Our sixth grade students will be attending Foothill Horizons in the foothills outside of Sonora February 21-24.  This week of Outdoor Education includes nature hikes, excursions to the caverns and classes on the flora and fauna of our local area.  This is a great experience for our students.

High School Balloting:  Both Modesto High and Gregori High will be on campus on Feb. 2, to give our students information regarding selection of classes for high school.  If your child is going to a high school other than these two, he/she will go to the MoHi presentation to get the information.  Ballots need to be signed and returned to the school in a timely manner, so please be attuned to this.  If you have questions contact Suzanne Howell in the office.

Jump Rope for Heart K-6  Feb 17:  In collaboration with the American Heart Association our students will be getting pledges and jumping rope for the cause of heart health.  If you can support this cause, we thank you.

Substitute Instructional Aides needed:  If you have an AA or BA and are interested in substituting in classrooms as an instructional aide, please contact Mrs. Boer, for more information.

Spring Photos:   As always with our Spring Photos, every student will have their picture taken February 15th.    Finished photo packets will go home a few weeks later.  If you do not want to pay for it, return the packet immediately.  If you do want the photos, choose your packet option and send payment, keeping the photos and returning what you don’t want, if any.  If you have any questions, contact Life Touch 544-0961.

Celebrations:  We love that family members want to celebrate with their children on special occasions.  However, because of equity issues, and our wellness policy, we cannot have parents bring treats for birthdays, nor fast food for any child except your own, and balloon bouquets that are brought end up in the office all day because we don’t allow them in the classroom or on the bus.  We thank you for not bringing these things to school.

Need Additional Homework Help?:   McDonald’s invites you to join them for FREE Tutoring Nights.  They offer a snack and tutoring on a first come first served basis from qualified tutors at the following 3 locations:  Carpenter Rd., Dale Rd., and Salida Blvd.   Tues & Wed 4-6pm

Minimum Days and Holidays:
Minimum Day:  February 17
No School:  February 13 and February 20

From the Transportation Dept.:
1. Our bus drivers are not allowed to pick up students at non-designated stops.  A child running to catch the bus could lead to tragedy as it has in the past at other locations.  Please have your child at the bus stop at least 5 minutes prior to the pick up time.
2. When students, or parents are waiting at bus stops, please do not sit or walk on lawns at the bus stops.  Please stay on the sidewalk away from private properties.
3. Thank you for your patience as the busses moved from the Dakota Lot to the big Shoemake Lot.  Staying out of that Shoemake lot during the morning drop off times is very important to make a safer bus experience for you and the children.
4.  FOGGY DAYS:  The following radio stations will broadcast information about foggy day bus delays:  HAWK 104.1 FM,  KHOP 95.1 FM, KAT Country 103.3 FM.  You can also call the Transportation Department at 523-9971 for more information.

FROM THE OFFICE

The adult bringing late students to school must come into the office to check them in.  If the reason for the tardy is an appointment, a note from the doctor/dentist/etc. must be brought to excuse the tardy.   Don’t forget to call if your student is at home sick so we can mark it excused. 523-9979

  • Parents need to accompany students to the office to sign in when the student is not

here by 8:10 or are returning from an appointment.

  • Please send in or call in any home address/phone or cell phone changes that happen any

         time during the school year.

    • Please try and work out transportation instructions before school. If you need to call to change arrangements we will do our best to locate the student but cannot make any guarantees.  If the teacher and/or office does not have a change of instruction the student will be sent home the normal way.
    • Free S.H.A.R.E.S. cards are available in the office for you to use whenever you go to SaveMart, Food Maxx, & Lucky.  When the store swipes your card it credits a portion of your purchase to Hart-Ransom.  Thanks to our families we have received checks for up to $700.00!

PARENTS AS PARTNERS

Mealtime is a great time to build family communication and great memories. Focus on the positive events that occurred through the day, take turns so one person doesn’t dominate the conversation, ask each to share one interesting thing they learned that day at school, at practice, at work, or wherever. Enjoy that dinner conversation.

Band Instrument Donations
It is exciting to see so many students interested in band this year! It has been over ten years since a new instrument was purchased for students to borrow. If you would like to donate a wind instrument (flute, clarinet, trumpet, alto sax, or other) either new or used, it would be a blessing to the program.
MORNING DROP OFF:
For the safety of our children we request that parents not drop off children earlier than 7:45 in the morning as we do not have supervision earlier than that time.

IT’S EASY TO DESIGNATE!
There are several “free” ways you can make money for
Hart-Ransom. Target & Washington Mutual’s Visa card programs will let you designate a portion of your credit card purchases to Hart-Ransom Elementary School.
Office Depot will donate a percentage of any purchace made with or without a credit card if you tell the checker at the time of purchase.
Don’t forget that Box Tops for Education labels and Campbells Soup’s UPC labels bring in several hundred dollars to our reward’s program every year. Thanks for your participation!

FOOD TO SHARE
The State of California requires that every school establish a Wellness Policy based on certain criteria. According to this policy, students may not share food with others.
Lately we have had a number of incidents in which food, such as pizza or other fast food, has been brought for a student and friends. Unfortunately, we cannot allow this.
If parents want to bring food to students – you may only bring for your own child and it must be brought to the office. Thank you for your cooperation.
LUNCH ACCOUNTS
Mrs. Figures, our cafeteria cashier, has an e-mail address: sfigures@hartransom.org
Feel free to contact her if you have any questions or concerns about your child’s lunch account.

ASTHMA FLAGS
In support of good health we have the Asthma Flag Program at Hart-Ransom. Each day we fly the color flag advised by the Stanislaus County Asthma Coalition. Parents of the most sensitive group are asked to fill out the form in today’s red folder. Only children with this permission slip returned will be allowed to spend red flag days at a designated indoor place. The four flags are described in the handout.

CELL PHONE AND EMPTY INK-JET AND LASER CARTRIDGE DONATIONS:

Did you or someone in your family get a new cell phone? If so, are you wondering what to do with your old one? Please let us recycle it for you. Hart-Ransom partners with the Funding Factory to recycle used cell phones as well as empty ink cartridges. In return, we earn points for lots of free things like digital cameras and even new ink for our school printers. Items can be turned in to Mrs. Martin in the computer lab or at the school office. Thanks for helping us help the environment and our school.

CAMPBELL’S LABELS
AND BOXTOPS
This is just a reminder to keep sending in those Campbell’s Labels. (NOTE: All you need to send in for Campbell’s is the UPC code on products like soup, V8, Pepperidge Farm, Swanson, Prego, Market Day and Franco American. See the blue insert in this red folder.)
And… Box Tops for Education still wants their little labels. Your participation in these two programs has brought our school several hundred dollars over the past couple years.
Thank you to Deanna Tiry for cutting, sorting, and processing these contributions.
Reminder:
If you are picking up your student during the school day, please come into the office to sign him/her out. Our policy is to call the student out of class only when the parent/guardian has arrived in the office.

REMINDERS
Toys are not to be brought to school, as they may be a distraction, damaged, lost or stolen. Any toys found will be held until the end of the school year.

Cell Phones are not allowed on campus. If necessary, there is always a phone available to students. Any cell phones found will be kept in the office until a parent picks it up.
